Larned,KS to Sterling,KS
Sitting here in the beautiful library at Sterling College after a stellar dinner in their cafeteria.
Left Larned this morning after breakfast served by a kiwana group in a building built by the WPA. The buildind is used as a community center.
Awoke to a cool 48 deg day with a west breeze. After packing up our gear and tent we headed out. First stop was Pawnee Rock which is a historical site that was used as a reference point on the Santa Fe trail as well as a gathering place for various indian tribes to gather to barter. Then it was off to Raymond,ks.
In this part of kansas us56 follows the santafe trail. We followed 56 for several miles and turned off on a county road for 27 miles of farm fields. Sorghum seemed to be doing well but most corn and sunflower were dead. Soy beans did fairly well but no where in the abundance of Illinois. Observed many types of caterpillars crossing the road.
In raymond we ate a light lunch across from the post office(the only open business in town). Lots of Goathead thorns.. Checked my tires before leaving and removed one before continuing ride. Most of the day has been with wind at our back or side and temp was around 71deg.
Continued thru Aubrey to Sterling where we beat the sag wagon and took a ride around a very ckean and tidy town.
Set up tent after sag arrived and proceded to do laundry ie:yesterdays and todays riding clothes. Then we were able to watch various sporting events, there was baseball, football, basketball, volleyball and track practices going on.
Todays ride was about 62 miles.
Tomorrow we are off to Hillsboro,ks after breakfast here at the cafeteria. E
